Macular Hole with Spontaneous Closure

The patient whose images are shown was referred for evaluation of a macular hole on 5/30/14. An early full thickness macular hole was found (yellow box) and she was scheduled for surgical repair. She cancelled her surgery for unrelated reasons and returned on 7/3/14 for another pre op appointment. On this appointment, a new SD-OCT was obtained which showed that the hole closed (red circle). This rarely occurs (in less than 1% of patients with macular holes). It was recommend that she not have surgery.
