False Positive 10-2 Visual Field Testing with Normal mf ERG and SD-OCT

This 52 year old woman has been taking hydroxychloroquine 400 mg/d for 2 years for systemic lupus erythematosus. She is 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 230 pounds. Her mf ERG and SD-OCT are normal, but her 10-2 VF developed a superior paracentral scotoma over the two visual fields that she has had. This was considered to have a false positive 10-2 visual field in the absence of toxic daily dosing, a high cumulative drug load, or objective test evidence of toxicity. She was allowed to remain on this regimen of therapy and asked to return in one year for follow-up.
